CALICUT UNIVERSITY TEACHER EDUCATION CENTRE - MANJERI

ABOUT US:

The Malabar region, particularly Malappuram District of Kerala, was once known for its educational backwardness. Ever since its inception, the University of Calicut has been at the forefront of initiatives aimed at uplifting this part of the state. Over the years, the University has consistently strived to bring quality education closer to the masses through outreach services and the establishment of study centres.

The Calicut University Teacher Education Centre, Manjeri, was established in 1992 as part of this mission. It was started under the University’s cost-based scheme to offer B.Ed. programmes, responding to the public demand for more opportunities in the field of teacher education at a time when very few B.Ed. colleges existed in the region.

Initially, the Centre functioned in a rented building with limited facilities. In 2004, it was shifted to the premises of a Government School at Chengara, Manjeri, making use of the school’s infrastructure with the permission of the Government of Kerala. Later, with the active support of students and the local community, the University procured 0.50 hectares of land at Cherani in Manjeri Municipality and constructed a dedicated building. The year 2011 marked a milestone when the Centre shifted to this new campus, set in a serene location away from the hustle and bustle of the town.

Today, the Centre offers B.Ed. programmes in six optional subjects:

  1. Malayalam
  2. Mathematics
  3. Natural Science
  4. Physical Science
  5. Social Science
  6. Urdu

Uniquely, CUTEC Manjeri stands out as the only Study Centre of the University of Calicut that offers a B.Ed. in Urdu, opening opportunities for aspiring teachers in this language.

Students from diverse backgrounds enrich the institution, guided and mentored by highly qualified and experienced faculty. Our students consistently perform well in University examinations and excel in teacher eligibility tests and competitive exams conducted by the Kerala Public Service Commission (PSC) and other agencies like NTA.

The Centre houses a well-maintained library of over 5000 books, covering both academic and general topics, along with a rich collection of periodicals that support academic and intellectual growth.

For more than two decades, the institution has remained committed to nurturing aspiring teachers into competent, socially responsible, and professionally committed educators. As envisaged by its founding dignitaries, the Centre continues to play a seminal role in the educational development of society at large.

Vision:

To provide high-quality education to aspiring teachers and to emerge as a centre of excellence in teacher education through innovative methods and inspirational teaching practices.

Mission:

  • To prepare student-teachers for the demands of the 21st century.
  • To produce socially and professionally committed teachers.
  • To inculcate values, ethics, scientific attitude, and a spirit of enquiry among teachers.
