The Malabar region, particularly Malappuram District, of Kerala was known for its educational backwardness. The University of Calicut, ever since its inception, has been in the forefront of all the activities that are aimed at the upliftment of this part of the world. Over the years the University has made continuous efforts in bringing its educational programmes to the masses through its outreach services and establishment of study Centres.

Calicut University Teacher Education Centre Manjeri was started in 1992 in Malappuram district of Kerala by the University of Calicut as one of its Centres offering BEd. Programmes under cost-based scheme. This was in response to the public demand for opportunities in the field of Teacher Education at a time when there were not many BEd. Colleges around. At the outset, the Centre was started in a rented building with modest facilities. In 2004 it was shifted to the premises of a Govt. School at Chengara, Manjeri and functioned utilising the facilities of the School with the permission of the Govt of Kerala. Later the University, with the active support of the students and local community, procured 0.50 hectares of land at Cherani in Manjeri Municipality and constructed a new building exclusively for running the course. Year 2011 was a milestone in the history of the institution-the Centre shifted to the new building built in a serene land cozily away from the hustle and bustle of the town.

The Centre is offering BEd. Programmes in six optional subjects viz. Malayalam, Mathematics, Natural Science, Physical Science, Social Science and Urdu. This is the only Teacher Education Institution under University of Calicut that offers a BEd. Programme in Urdu. Students from all sections of the society enrich our institution. They are guided and nurtured by qualified and experienced teachers. Our students have always fared well in the University Examinations. They have proved their mettle in various teacher eligibility tests and competitive examinations conducted by KeralaPublic Service Commission.

We have a fine library with over 5000 books on varied topics. Apart from specific academic titles there is an impressive collection of general-title books too. A good number of periodicals further enrich our library.

The Centre is committed to nurturing and shaping aspiring teachers who would eventually become proficient educators. For over two decades the Centre has contributed qualified and committed teachers to the society. As envisaged by its founding dignitaries, this institution has been playing a seminal role in the educational development of the society at large.
