Wayanad is one of the most educationally backward tribal district in kerala. It lacks educational facilities for economically and socially deprived people. While considering the educational scenario, it come to notice that this district have got only two teacher training colleges during the period from 1999 - 2004 , the district have been going through an agrarian crisis and aspirants to the teaching profession found it difficult to get trained in institutions outside wayanad, as it incurres high expenses in terms of money. By considering these facts, the university decided to start a teacher education centre at SulthanBbathery.
The institution started on 01/04/2002 and was inaugurated by Dr K K N Kurupu, Vice chancellor of university. During 2002 , the centre had an intake of 120 students with the optional subjects, social science, Malayalam, mathematics, and commerce.With thc commencement of two year B Ed, the centre had an intake of 50 students [1 unit] with the optional subject , English, Mathematics, Commerce, Social science and Physical science.

The aim is not only focussed on imparting subject knowledge and skills, but also to mould the students with better conduct and character committed to the societal needs and national development.
